Godelier, Maurice (1934-)

Maurice Godelier greatly contributed to the institutionalization of the subdiscipline of economic anthropology in France. After promoting an original synthesis of neo‐Marxist and structuralist approaches, he went on to develop a comprehensive critique of Marxist theory, as well as of notions of gift and exchange. His influential book The Mental and the Material presents a theory of the relations between ideology and economic practice.
